How to get the cheapest Netflix plans: Netflix prices by region

With the long Easter weekend coming up, this is a chance for many Australians to trial out Netflix. The movie streaming service recently launched in Australia to much fanfare.  However, while the Australian prices for Netflix are reasonable, they are not as good as other Netflix regions.

For years, Australians have been accessing Netflix via DNS Changers, Proxies or VPNs. There is no need to use these anymore if you are happy with the 1,156 Netflix titles served to Australia. The IP address you use to access Netflix  determines which region you are in. Have a US IP? You will have access to 7,387 titles. Have a UK IP? You will have access to 3,318 titles. Canada? 3,945. Many movies are available on 1 region and not on any others. You can sign up to Netflix via any region so why not sign up to the one that’s the cheapest?

A 12 month subscription to Netflix Australia will cost you $107.88 for the basic, $143.88 for the Standard and $179.88 for the Premium plan. By signing up for a plan via Colombia, the basic costs $85.56, $96 for the Standard, and $128.40 for the Premium plan thus saving you $22.32, $47.88 and $51.48 per year.

Once you sign up to Netflix Colombia, there is nothing further you need to do. Once you access the service without the use of a VPN or DNS changer, it will automatically assign you the Australian region.  You can change your IP address to a Colombian IP for free using a free proxy.

However, subscribing to a DNS changer such as Getflix allows you access 20 different Netflix regions. These services also allow you to access sites that are georestricted to the US such as Hulu.

Netflix Around The World (Check which titles are available on which region)

How to sign up

1a. Colombia: Go to this Colombian proxy list. Enter the proxy details in your browser.

1b.  Brazil: Do the above or go to Getflix and change your Netflix region to Brazil.

2. Sign up to Netflix Colombia / Brazil.

Remember you will be paying monthly in the Colombian Peso or Brazilian Real. If you ever want to switch to Australian billing (to pay in Australian dollars), you can do so by contacting Netflix.

Update 31/8: It appears Colombian Netflix is now restricting their service to local credit cards so you’ll have to sign up via Brazil to get the cheapest price. Brazilian prices have gone up to 19.90, 22.90 & 29.90. It works out marginally cheaper (due to current AUD rate) to sign up via Netflix Chile.

It’s Colombia. Columbia is not a country.

This is great, thanks a lot!

Do you know if gift cards in AUD can be applied to any region?

Also, if you contact Netflix to bill in AUD instead of Peso or Real, does the price change back up to the AUD pricing or stay at the cheaper pricing?

    27/04/2015 @ 12:43 pm
    • Gift cards are locked to the region they were created in.

If you contact Netflix to change from one region to Australia, they will start billing you the Australian rates.

There is a 3rd option for cheap Netflix and that is signing up via iTunes on Apple TV. You can often buy iTunes gift cards at 20% or so. That can be an option but requires you find an Apple TV for the one time setup.

  3. Bill Donald:

If you sign up with Colombia Netflix, then go to use US Netflix it’s in Spanish. To change to English, login, then go to the pop up user profile in the top right corner, select ‘Administer Perfiles’, then ‘Idioma’, click English then the ‘Guardar’ button.

I could not register for a Colombian account. The only payment option was Credit Card, after entering my details I was told that there was some sort of problem (can’t remember what it said exactly). Seems that my european CC cannot be used for that. I tried Brazil then (using a VPN), chose “Paypal” later, and that worked.

    • Ah that’s weird. It may be that your bank is blocking transactions from some countries? I know mine sometimes blocks US transactions. Glad you got it working with Brazil.

There’s a lot of discussion goin on about this topic on a german blog ( for those who can understand). Well, seems that Colombian accounts now require a *local* Creditcard. The price in Brazil has raised btw., as far as I can tell Chile is now a bit cheaper.

I have created a spreadsheet, with updating pricing. More importantly, the spreadsheet automatically updates the currency conversion into AUD. Enjoy.

      10/01/2016 @ 4:14 pm
  13. Kate:

Hi, can I ask where you are getting your data of the different prices? Im finding it hard to get any online.

    28/02/2016 @ 12:03 pm
    • I used a VPN or proxy for each country to see the different prices. Given that this is an old post however, I’m not sure if the prices are still valid.

      28/02/2016 @ 7:53 pm
    • giu:

Use my spreadsheet linked above for latest pricing and currency conversion.
