Neil,

Yes I understand your concern. But,

(1) The point associated with negative votes is actually relatively small.

(2) If the voted deal is indeed a spam, the deal will be deleted (by a mod at some point in time), negative votes be removed, together with all the negative points.

So maybe not that much an issue (I hope).

Very cool and should encourage more participation but..

There are times when SPAM and generally bad deals are posted that need negative votes. So perhaps for the negative maybe: IF NOT positive votes>some arbitrary number OR negative votes>1, then reduced user point by 1. Something like that.
